Traditional Hong Kong "Wife" Cake 港式家鄉老婆餅

No one knows for sure how “Wife Cakes” got their name. Some tell the story of a woman sold into slavery to help her poor family, whose husband created a simple but delicious pastry, which earned him enough money to bring her back. Others share the tale of a chef whose wife was unimpressed with the snacks he brought home from work, and suggested he use winter melon—an ingredient from her hometown.

We may never know for certain how these unique pastries came to be, but made with sesame, rich winter melon paste and the finest flour, Kee Wah’s Winter Melon Pastries, or “Wife Cakes”, are a beloved traditional Hong Kong snack.
